Dr Nicola J. Smith is a NSW Young Tall Poppy and Early Career Researcher at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, Sydney. Having completed her PhD at University of Melbourne and Baker Heart Research Institute, Nicola spent four years in a Scottish laboratory with the leader in her field. She works on cardiovascular disease, an illness which kills more Australians than all cancers combined, where she investigates how novel proteins contribute to high blood pressure, aiming to develop more effective drugs with fewer side effects. Her work has earned her numerous Young Investigator Awards and national and international invitations to present her research findings. Nicola is passionate about communicating science to the broader community and has been involved in her own radio show and various media projects.
