Dr Pablo Enriori, PhD, is an international recognized endocrinologist with a strong clinical and basic research background in the field of Endocrinology and Metabolism. He was awarded a Master and a PhD degree in Argentina, and he continued his postdoctoral training at the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Oregon, USA, where he worked with Prof Michael Cowley. In 2008, he relocated to Australia where he is presently a Senior Research fellow at the Department of Physiology at Monash University. His work demonstrated how the brain becomes resistant to the peripheral signals that regulate energy balance (leptin resistant state) during obesity, and how these central alterations could lead peripheral dysregulations such as, diabetes, dyslipidaemia and hypertension, which collectively underlie the aetiology of metabolic syndrome. He also characterized novel subsets of specialized neurons within the brain that detect and also regulate blood glucose levels. His contributions may lead to the development of novel pharmacological targets to treat high blood pressure, insulin resistance/diabetes and obesity.
Currently, his research focuses on the physiological significance, the neuronal pathways and the cellular mechanisms by which Estradiol, a hormone essential for sexual reproduction, can prevent fat accumulation and overcome leptin resistance during chronic high fat diet feeding.
